It’s tax time: Dinner’s on us

As an accountant, Marie Jett has been able to figure one thing for sure: Work is her life right now.

She’s clocking 70-hour weeks, leaving the office at 10:30 p.m. some nights and logging time on the weekends.

It’s tax season crunch time, and that has Jett and the nation’s 1.3 million accountants working insane hours, losing sleep and missing the family.

But Jett’s firm, Greenwalt CPAs in Indianapolis, is among a growing group of companies pulling out all the stops to make this wildly busy time as comfortable as possible for employees.

At Greenwalt, that means a hot dinner catered each evening for employees working late, with dishes such as lasagna, baked chicken, cheesy potatoes, breads and desserts.

"This week I’ve pretty much just stayed at the office," said Jett, a tax manager, who enjoyed dinner Thursday night courtesy of the company. "It’s nice because they do try to be as flexible with employees during the busy season as possible."

That flexibility allows Jett to leave the office for a couple-hour break in the evening with her husband and then finish the rest of her work from home late at night.

"It’s just the right thing to do," said Anita Sherman, a partner at Greenwalt. "This is hard work, and we want to make it easier on them personally."
